Grilled Avocados with Ponzu Sauce

If you love the creamy deliciousness of avocados you are going to love this grilled avocado with ponzu sauce recipe. I remember the first time I tasted grilled avocados at an Izakaya restaurant in Washington D.C. I was blown away by the simplicity (and the price!). The first thing I did when I got home to Colorado was to go find some avocados. We’ve been making these at home ever since!

The trick to making the best grilled avocados is to use ripe avocados. But not so ripe that they are turning brown. Do you remember the story of Goldilocks and the Three Little Bears? Yeah, it’s like that. I like to buy hard, green avocados and let them ripen up on my kitchen counter for a few days. This way I can time things right and eat those avocados up when they are at their peak ripeness.

Did I mention my kids absolutely love grilled avocados with ponzu sauce and will easily gobble up 3 each? Sometimes I pack a non-grilled version of this in their lunch. Just sprinkle a little lemon juice on the avocado flesh to prevent browning.

How to Make Ponzu Sauce

I’ve always loved ponzu sauce, I gravitate towards tart citrus flavors so it is a perfect fit. But I had no idea how truly easy this sauce was to make at home. With only 3 ingredients and no cooking involved this is simple cooking at it’s best. I prefer to make this sauce with mirin because it is a little sweeter. If you don’t have mirin or have trouble finding it, rice vinegar works as well. It will just be a little more tart. If tart is not your thing and you want it a little sweeter, you could always add the rice vinegar and a pinch of sugar to a small saucepan. Heat it up on the stove just enough to melt the sugar crystals. Let it cool down before adding in the soy sauce and lemon juice. I like to use low-sodium soy sauce because I think it tastes just as good as the real deal and it has less sodium. So why not?

Once you start having ponzu sauce lying around you’ll find so many different things it goes well with. I especially love it on top of a fresh cucumber salad. It’s also delicious as a marinade for mushrooms or for pickling little sweet peppers. Want to spice things up? Add some red pepper flakes for an extra kick. Yum!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium-sized ripe avocados
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Ponzu Sauce

  • Juice of 1/2 a lemon
  • 2 tablespoons mirin, or rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat the grill.
  2. Make the ponzu sauce. Add the lemon juice, mirin, and soy sauce to a small mixing bowl. Give it a little stir and then it’s ready to go.
  3. Cut the avocados in half and remove the pit.
  4. Brush olive oil on the flesh of the avocado using a basting brush. This will prevent the avocados from sticking to the grill.
  5. Place the avocados flesh side down on the grill. Grill for about 5 minutes at around 350°, or until nice grill marks develop.
  6. Pour a little of the ponzu sauce inside the avocado where the pit was. Serve immediately while still warm. I like to serve these with a spoon and you can just scoop the avocado right out of the peel.
